Who’s Funnier, AI or a Professional Comedian?

The New York Time recently ran a piece, “In the Battle Between Bots and Comedians, A.I. Is Killing” (NYT Article). A NYC comedian lost a head-to-head battle with an AI bot trained on Sarah Silverman jokes. She has subsequently sued the bot developer for copyright infringement.

This battle (and AI victory) highlights the concerns underlying the screenwriters’ strike – pitting the speed and mechanics of AI versus creativity and originality of humans.

No doubt, in today’s algorithmic, TikTok-driven engagement model, it’s all about volume and speed. So why wouldn’t you have AI write and give “your” jokes, in 15-second clips? I’ve been pumping out way more Dad jokes using ChatGPT. :)

But staying power still comes from human creativity.

The true masters will be those who figure out how to leverage AI to stimulate and unleash their creativity and emotional intelligence in unpredictable ways. In comedy, and in business.
